The Thistle Hotel, previously known as the County Hotel, was built in 1874 by architect John Johnstone and is Listed Grade II. The hotel stretched down to Neville Street from Westgate Road and returned along Grainger Street to an entrance facing the impressive portico of Newcastle Central Station. When in 1897 the owners wished to extend the hotel further along Neville Street, they demolished all of Johnstone's Neville Street frontage and two bays on Grainger Street and built the 135 foot frontage, with grand first floor reception rooms. The architect for this new frontage was Matthew Horner Graham.
