St Stephens, Low Elswick

St. Stephen's Church, Low Elswick, Newcastle. The foundation stone was laid by Sir W. G. Armstrong on 19 November 1866 and dedicated by the Lord Bishop of Durham in 1868. Donations to meet the cost of building came from various sources; the Elswick firm of Sir William Armstrong, Bishop Baring's Special Church Building Fund and the Cruddas family. W.D. Cruddas was churchwarden from 1866-1912, the family contributed the tower and spire, north aisle large vestry, west porch and the peal of eight bells. The chancel houses a fine oak reredos depicting the last supper and an organ was given the Sir William Armstrong.
