St. Nicholas's Church, consecrated in 1799. The parish is believed to date from Saxon times. The tower and west end of the present church was erected in 1799, the architectwas John Dodds. The enlagement in 1820 on the same Georgian classical lines was the work of John Dobson. Further enlargements were made in 1912/13 and in 1959. Throughout the Middle Ages the area served by the church was North and South Gosforth, Fawdon, Kenton and Coxlodge. In 1805 the register shows the marriage of Edward Barrett to Mary Graham Clarke - their daughter Elizabeth married the poet Robert Browning.
