St Andrews, Bywell

St. Andrew's Church, traditionally founded by St. Wilfred in the 7thC. The outstanding feature is the pre-conquest tower which shows early Saxon work and the Roman material used. The chancel arch and that to the South transept are 13thC. Other early features are the 'Lepers Squint' and the piscina in the South Transept. On the outside many early grave slabs have been built into the outer wall of the North transept when it was added in the 19thC, these date from before 1295. Formerly the Parish Church of Riding Mill and Broomhaugh and known as th'White Church' it was vested in the Redundant Churches Fund in 1975.
