Spiral Staircases These wind around a central pillar inside towers, they connect the separate storeys of the castle. This staircase in Warkworth Castle is unusual, in that the spiral is clockwise. Most are anti-clockwise, this was to give a right handed defender the advantage over a right handed attacker trying to mount the stairs from the bottom.
