The multi-storey car park together with much of the surrounding shopping centre was built in the late 60's and has been a major, if controversial, landmark on the Gateshead skyline ever since. It came to national prominence when it featured in the cult gangster movie 'Get Carter' as the location where a young Bryan Mosley (Alf Roberts of Coronation Street fame) was thrown from the top floor by Jack Carter, played by Michael Caine.

The upper floors have been inaccessible to the public since 1995 and its days are numbered. It was designed by Owen Luder CBE and at the time was hailed as a contemporary design classic. He also designed the Dunston 'Rocket' and the Tricorn Centre, Portsmouth. The structure comprises seven levels of parking which commence at the fourth storey level above the shopping centre market and originally provided 490 car parking spaces. The 5,500 sq ft 'roof-top restaurant' was marketed but never occupied and a number of subsequent expressions of interest were never realised.
