The foundation stone of the Chapel of ease of the Milbourne estate was laid on 15th May 1867 by Miss Jane Anne Bates, eldest daughter of Ralph Bates, JP, DL. The building is a fine unspoilt example of Victorian Gothic and able to seat 100 people, it consists of a chancel, nave, vestry and porch. An interesting external feature is the broach spire. Internally, the wall lights are the original oil lamps now lit by electricity. The bells and clock in the tower were given by Nathaniel Bates, and the altar cloth, communion rail cushions and hassocks were worked and given by Miss Sarah Bates. The church was consecrated in 1871.
