Holy Island is only accessible over a causeway at low tide and is, therefore, cut off from the mainland twice a day. Lindisfarne Castle was originally a Tudor fort and was converted into a private house in 1903 by Edwin Lutyens. There is a small walled garden a short walk from the castle planned by Gertrude Jekyll.
