St. Mary the Virgin Church, Holystone was rebuilt in 1848. Evidence suggests a Norman church stood on this site, rebuilding and repair occurring frequently over the past 900 years. Holystone is an important site in the early Christian history of Northumberland. St. Mungo's well on the south side of the village is reputed to be one of S. Kentigerns places of preaching and baptism. St. Paulinus baptised at St. Ninian's well in AD 627, later known as St. Paulinus's or the Lady's well.
