Here are a few things to try and spot when visiting churches.

Gargoyle
Stone spout to keep rainwater from
the gutter clear of the wall, carved in the shape of an ugly head.

Hammer-Beam Roof
Type of wooden roof that has no crossbeams to support it.
They are often beautifully carved.

Effigy Tombs
If the figure on the tomb is a knight
with crossed legs he most probably
fought in the crusades.

|
Architectural Tombs
These are usually for high ranking members of the church,
such as bishops.

|
Reredos
An ornamental screen covering
the wall at the back of the altar,
carved in wood or stone.
|
|
Eagle Lecturn
A wood or brass eagle with
outstretched wings for holding
an open bible.
|
|
Rood Screen
Carved wood or stone screen which
separates the altar from the congregation, often intricately carved.
|
|
Misericord
A hinged seat in the choir stall
for resting on during long services.
The underside is often carved.
|
|
Pulpit with Sounding Board
The wooden sounding board was used
to reflect the preacher's voice toward
the congregation.
|
|
Carved Font
The receptacle for baptismal water,
used for Christenings. Often with
an ornate carved wooden cover.
