The Bruce Building, Percy Street

The Bruce Building (1896 - 1900)
Architect: Joseph Oswald

Location: Percy Street, Newcastle upon Tyne.

This is a detail of the tile work in the entrance to the Newcastle Breweries head office. Beyond the entrance hall a second set of heavy, wooden doors complete with elaborately etched glass inserts open onto the main foyer of the building. This is perhaps one of the most ostentatiously decorated areas. Huge quantities of faience tiles have been used in varying shades of brown, cream and pale turquoise. The walls are covered from floor to ceiling in elaborate panels, divided by a heavily decorated dado.
